CHARLIE HILL was not the greatest of our featherweight champions, but no one could
say he was not the gamest. Throughout a boxing career that lasted barely six years, he was
plagued with ill-health and suffered weight-making problems. Yet this lanky Scotsman
won his title at the time when there were a number of top-grade men at his weight and
twice successfully defended it to win a Lonsdale Belt outright.
Born at Cambuslang near Glasgow on June 20, 1930, he did not turn pro until three
days before his 23rd birthday, having been Scottish amateur champion in 1953. He
probably stayed among the non-paid fraternity too long, who knows?
Employed as a ship's electrician, he was persuaded by Tom Gilmour to let loose his
talent among the pros and remained unbeaten in his first 18 bouts, except for an
unintentional foul that cost him the verdict against Andy Monaghan, whom he knocked
out in a return contest.

JULIO CESAR CHAVEZ just might be one of the
greatest Mexican fighters ever. It's a little too soon to say.
But Chavez's reputation is growing. The second-round
hammering of Roger Mayweather confirmed he deserves
to be ranked with today's best.

COMMONWEALTH heavyweight champion Trevor Berbick
of Canada could meet Frank Bruno or Funso Banjo
within the next few months with the title on the line.
The two Britons are among the four official contenders
recently named by the Commonwealth Championships Commitee,
the other two being Proud Kilimanjaro of Zimbabwe
and David Russell of Australia.
